Mustard Cemetery is also known as Moccasin Cemetery, Mustard Hill Cemetery, and it is also the former Jones Cemetery.

For our Veteran's Memorials on this website you will see the U.S. Flag icon beside their names, and also beside their names will have this Mustard Cemetery Rock icon which will indicate that there are pictures on their memorial page. Some of the information that is gathered for this website is from Find A Grave, The Portsmouth Daily Times, The People's Defender, Google Newspaper Archive, Portsmouth Public Library, and Family Search.

The Rarden Township does not own this website, this is owned and maintained by Gregory B. Syroney "Little Beatty", who is a former resident of Rarden Township and the Village of Rarden in the northwest part of Scioto County in Ohio. Rarden Township owns Mustard Cemetery but not this website.

Why are people buried facing East?

     Under Christian traditions, people are buried with their feet pointed eastwards to follow the belief that the Second Coming of Jesus would occur from the east. This belief originates from a statement in the book of Matthew where the return of Jesus would originate from the East.

     The burial orientation of placing the head facing the west and feet facing the east is also followed by the layout of Christian churches. In certain Christian denominations, members of the clergy are buried with the opposite orientation. At the General Resurrection, it is then believed that the clergy will rise facing the also-resurrected faithful and will be able to minister to them.
